Gillingham goalkeeper Glenn Morris reacts to their 1-0 defeat at AFC Wimbledon and looks ahead to Bromley visiting Priestfield in League 2 on Thursday

Gillingham goalkeeper Glenn Morris felt the better team lost on Monday night.

The Gills had plenty of pressure in and around the Wimbledon area but were unable to make it count, losing the game 1-0.

Morris conceded a controversial goal on 50 minutes, turned in from a corner by Matty Stevens’ arm, but other than that wasn’t too busy. He only made one save in the match.

“I felt like we had the better chances in the game,” he said.

“It was a decent performance. It's just off the back of a defeat at Colchester and a poor performance. You want to come away with something from (Wimbledon) and we haven't done that and it's really disappointing.

“You have to look at the performance and the effort that we put in, which was what's needed, and we just need to get over the line and pick up points.

“We were way off the pace (at Colchester on Boxing Day) and let everyone down. It wasn’t like that (on Monday). We were really in the game, fully committed.

“I felt like we were the better team but you don’t always get what you deserve.”

Gillingham’s players didn’t complain at the time about Stevens’ goal.

Commenting on that moment, Morris said: “At the time it happened quite quickly. You could sense it was either a chest or something. It was hard to tell.

“Obviously, he didn't head it. You're not sure from where you are.

“It looks like it's a hand and it's disappointing but we've got to defend it a bit better from our point of view.

“I don't think we've let many corners in and we pride ourselves on that and it's disappointing.

“It was always going to take something like that in the game to nick it.

“In the second half we were really pushing on and pressing. We needed to get a goal from somewhere and it's just not happening for us at the minute.

“Hopefully, it can start in the new year.”

The Gills start 2025 with a game against Bromley on Thursday night.

Morris said: “If we play like that, and that's how a Gillingham team should play, then luck always falls on the right side. You make your own luck.

“We have to try and get over the line and we have to try to pick up points.

“We've lost too many games. We're bitterly disappointed but we know that we've put a shift in.

“It's a bit of a disappointment to come away with nothing. But that's football and we can't feel sorry for ourselves. We have to go again.

“The games are coming thick and fast and we've just got to try and pick up some points.

“I'm sure that come the new year we'll pick up and we'll get some points. It's a really tight league.

“I was disappointed to lose again. Disappointed to have so many defeats against our name but we can push on and I'm sure we can pick up some more points.

“We've just got to concentrate on the next game and try and put a good performance in first and foremost and knock the door down and get three points.”

The Gills lost 2-1 at Bromley in early December at Hayes Lane and hope to reverse their fortunes at Priestfield.

Morris said: “It doesn't matter who we play next. We need to get back on the horse and get the three points.

“Bromley was another disappointing evening and we didn't put the performance in we wanted to.

“We'll have to try and put that right but it wouldn't matter who we played next. We just need to get back on it and pick up some points.”

Morris was also asked about the departure of George Lapslie, who has signed for Bradford City.

The midfielder joined from Mansfield in mid-January 2023 to help the club avoid relegation from League 2.

“George was fantastic,” Morris said.

“I loved playing with him. He was fully committed every game, every training session.

“He worked so hard for the team. He really helped us along with a few others. It was what we needed at that point.

“I really, really hope that he goes on and succeeds. It will be nice to see him when we play (Bradford) in March.

“I can't speak highly enough of George. He's a great character and you'd always want him in your team. I'm going to miss him.”
