Goalkeeper Jack Bonham says last weekend’s performance was his best yet for the Gills – but knows he has more to give.
The 26-year-old summer signing has now got four clean sheets, but believes he should have had six shutouts and is always looking to make improvements.
Speaking after a top-class performance at Accrington, he said: “It was probably my best performance of the season so far. I made a really good save first half, from a header. I made a few stops second half and I was pleased.
“Hopefully I can keep that momentum going forward, personally, and the team as well.
“We have been a lot more defensively solid, we’re disappointed not to have more clean sheets but I am sure they will come.”
More on the Gills;
Bonham has impressed over the last two seasons while out on loan from Brentford, at Carlisle and then Bristol Rovers.
Comparing his current form, however, is a difficult one for the 6ft 4in stopper.
He said: “I am probably too critical of myself so it is hard to say. I probably play down the things I do well and then make a big deal out of the things I don’t do well!
“I am not the best judge of character but I feel like my body is in the best shape it has been. I have been struggling with that, since the start of the season a bit. Physically I am in a lot better place than I was.
“I know there is still loads more to come from me and hopefully I can use last Saturday to move forward and then keep that form and momentum throughout the rest of the season.”
Kicking was one of the areas the former Watford youngster wanted to improve.
“I have been disappointed about that over the last few years,” he admitted. “I am working hard on that.
“Getting my body right is one of the main things I need to do, health-wise. I have been struggling with aches and pains that have been hindering my striking and kicking.
“I feel like there are things this year I could have done better but I am just critical of everything! I can see something and think, ‘can I be better at that?’.
“If I am good at one area I don’t like to rest on my laurels, I want to get better in all aspects of goalkeeping.”
Fans have been impressed with his performances so far, and he added: “I am pleased with how things are going, I have no complaints.”
Focusing on the team, he also believes they have plenty to offer.
He said: “If we can string a few results together then we can climb and start pushing to the play-offs.
“We need to make sure we stay defensively solid, we have the firepower up top and if they can start scoring again like they were at the start of the season then we can be a real threat.
“The team here has everything we need to push for the play-offs and do well this year.”
