Loan midfielder Dan Phillips picked up his second red card for Gillingham on Saturday.
Phillips - on loan from Watford - turned in a man-of-the-match display at MK Dons last week but against Ipswich Town he picked up two yellow cards in the space of just five minutes, the second of which assistant boss Paul Raynor felt was naive.
His discipline record doesn’t make great reading, with two reds and five bookings in his 13 appearances for the Gills. He’s been cautioned in his last three outings.
Against Ipswich he received a booking for dissent towards referee Alan Young on 69 minutes and then on 73 minutes he was penalised for a foul.
“It was very naive, very silly,” said Raynor.
“He said he didn’t pull the guy back, that he got across him and gave him a little nudge. I spoke to him and so did the gaffer, he let the guys down, that was naivety.
“He didn’t think that second one justified a yellow and I don’t think we needed to do too much too justify a yellow with the referee.”
Raynor questioned the referee's penalty decision late on, that led to Ipswich’s fourth goal. Max Ehmer was adjudged to have fouled Joe Pigott for the decision.
“If he is giving penalties like that then he would be giving 10 a game,” commented the Gills assistant, who added: “Funny that he didn’t see the pulls on Vadaine Oliver in the first half but that would be making excuses. That didn’t help us but that would be nit-picking. We are to blame (for the defeat) not the referee.”
