Ady Pennock is confident that young striker Liam Nash will excel in the pro game.
The non-league hot-shot signed a two-year deal with Gillingham on Friday after an impressive trial period.
Head coach Pennock had been tracking the 21-year-old former Maldon & Tiptree forward all summer and, after securing his signature, the ball is now in the player’s court.
Pennock said: “We know he is not the finished article but it is a good opportunity for him and he really shone during his trial.
“He can learn off people around him. He wants to learn, he wants to do well and he is hungry, very hungry.
“People might be saying, ‘well it’s Maldon & Tiptree (where he scored 37 goals last season)’ but it doesn’t matter for me. We’ll give him an opportunity and I think everyone needs a chance in life, don’t they?
“Hopefully this is his chance and I am sure he will take it.
“I knew of him from last season and got him in (for talks) near enough straight after the season finished. He spoke to other managers as well but he was pleased with what he saw here and I am pleased he has come on board.”
The striker, who also attracted the attention of fellow League 1 side Doncaster Rovers, started his career with hometown club Hullbridge Sports and has also played for Great Wakering Rovers, Billericay Town and on loan at Aveley, where he captained the side aged just 20.
Nash, who scored twice against Chats and won a penalty in the pre-season game at Dover, said: “The way the fans have supported me over these past couple of games is very welcoming. I’ll give 100% back to them.
“I’m going to put the effort in to get my starts and do my hardest to get the ball in the back of the net.”
Gillingham are back in action on Tuesday (7.30pm) against Belgian side Patro Eisden.
