Gillingham’s former boss Neil Harris is stepping down as head coach of Championship side Millwall.
Harris’ Millwall side sit 11th in the Championship table, just six points away from the play-off places. The Lions are due to face league leaders Sheffield United tomorrow (Wednesday) and he will leave after their game at Middlesbrough on Saturday.
Harris said: “I always said when I returned that I would leave when the time felt right, and now is that time.”
Club chairman James Berylson said: “I want to thank Neil for all his efforts since returning to the club and we will be forever grateful to him for that.
“After discussions with Neil in recent days, he felt it was the right time to step down from the role following the Middlesbrough game and I have accepted his decision."
Harris took over at Millwall for the second time, re-joining them in February after a brief spell in charge of Cambridge United, where he had replaced outgoing boss Mark Bonner.
He took over a Millwall side sitting just one point above the drop zone but led them to safety, finishing the campaign in the comfort of 13th place, after a run of five successive wins at the end of the season.
A 1-0 home defeat to Coventry City on Saturday was Millwall’s first loss in 10, which included a run of four consecutive 1-0 victories - a scoreline which had propelled the Gills to the top of League 2 at the start of the 2023/24 season under his tenure.
Harris would eventually be sacked by the Gills just two months into that campaign after the early season form dipped, leaving Priestfield after a 2-0 loss at Crewe and eighth in the table.
Millwall say that their interim management plans will be confirmed in due course.
Harris has with him his long-time assistant David Livermore, who was also no.2 at Gillingham and Adam Barrett - who captained the Gills to the League 2 title in 2013 - as assistant head coach.
Former Gills kit-man Steve Jones had also returned to Millwall, following Harris to the Den, along with physio Gary Hemens.
