Stuart Nelson is close to recovering from a hand ligament injury.
The 33-year-old Gills goalkeeper was injured in the first game of the season.
He suffered an injury to his thumb in the game against MK Dons, leaving the field at half-time.
But he looks set to be back fighting for his place in the team soon.
Gills boss Peter Taylor said: “He is training with us now and doing well.
“He is pushing on, which is good and he will be delighted to be back out there. He had been training using a softball and with protection around the hand but he is now grabbing the normal football and looking alright.
“He is not ready for first team football yet but I don’t think that is going to be far away. I would say a couple of weeks max.”
Nelson was replaced in goal by Millwall loanee Stephen Bywater, who has helped the Gills register clean sheets in two of their last three games.
Fellow keeper Glenn Morris, who joined in the summer, has played in the Capital One Cup and Johnstone’s Paint Trophy, helping Taylor’s men to wins over Yeovil and Stevenage.
“Stephen has done great and so has Glen Morris,” said the Gills manager.
“I can’t believe I am praising three goalkeepers, they would be surprised to hear that from me.”
