Stuart Nelson lost a fourth-round FA Cup tie at Stevenage four seasons ago – but can’t remember much about it.
The Gillingham keeper, then playing for Notts County, suffered concussion midway through the first half and played the rest of the match in a daze.
If that was a low, he’s not short of highs in a competition that is littered with stories of triumph and disaster.
For Nelson, while the name Brackley brings anguish, matches against Charlton, Sunderland and Manchester City bring joy.
“Every player who has had a long career will have highs and lows, that’s how it works,” said 34-year-old Nelson.
“Every year there is an upset. I don’t remember Manchester City winning the cup every year over the past five seasons, so there has to be an upset along the way.
“It is not nice when it happens to you but that is what the FA Cup is about. You just hope it doesn’t happen to you and if it does, not very often.”
It was back in January, 2012 that Nelson and Notts County suffered a 1-0 defeat at Stevenage. The victors went on to play Spurs in the fifth round while the goalie nursed a sore head.
He said: “I must have got knocked out slightly in the game because from a certain point in the game I don’t really remember a lot.
“I chipped my tooth off when one of my own team-mates kneed me in the face after about 30 minutes. I don’t remember what I did after that until sometime in the second half.”
