Gillingham hoping to have defensive cover in for their League Cup trip to Southend United

A new signing could be in place for Gillingham before they make their return trip to Southend.

The two teams meet again at Roots Hall in the League Cup first round tomorrow (Tuesday) night.

Boss Justin Edinburgh will make changes to his starting XI and is likely to rest central defender Deji Oshilaja, who has only just returned from injury to play his first 90 minutes at the weekend.

Edinburgh has been chasing a new defender and a deal might be concluded today (Monday).

Speculation on Saturday night was that West Ham’s 18-year-old Josh Pask was the man coming in.

Edinburgh said: “I hope that we will conclude one for Monday and that will bolster the numbers and then we will look to see where we can enhance and improve the squad before the end of the window (on August 31).

“It is quite bizarre to be playing Southend twice in a short space of time but I am sure Phil Brown (Southend manager) might make a few changes and so will we. I think we have to cautious.

“That was Deji’s first 90 minutes, as well as one or two others and we will look to utilise the squad.”

The Gills, meanwhile, remain in the hunt for another striker, now Luke Norris has departed.

Edinburgh said: “We are always on the lookout and you can never have enough goalscorers. Luke Norris has left the club and that frees another position up.”
