The club is co-owned by former Crystal Palace and Manchester United winger Wilfried Zaha and rapper Stormzy.

Millen effectively replaces another former Gills man in the hotseat, with AFC Croydon parting company with Jermaine McGlashan earlier in the season.

Since then, Michael Kamara has been in interim charge for 10 games and he will now become Millen’s assistant.

Millen, who has previously worked at Crystal Palace, Bristol City and MK Dons, said: “Being a Croydon native, this opportunity felt like a natural fit. Crystal Palace will always be my team, but Croydon is where my heart is.

“This role aligns perfectly with my current work with the PFA in the region. Coaching remains my passion, and this part-time position gives me the chance to continue developing players, some of whom I’ve worked with before. I’m excited to be part of this journey with AFC Croydon Athletic.”

Millen had a caretaker charge in spell of Gillingham in October 2023 following the sacking of Neil Harris as he stepped up from his work in the club’s academy and overseeing the B team.

It was an eventful period which saw Millen oversee two league wins and three defeats. The most memorable moment came in a 4-1 loss at Walsall, when Millen was dismissed for an apparent trip of a home player - he was later cleared of any wrongdoing.

AFC Croydon Athletic are 10th in Isthmian South East with 20 points from 15 games.
