Connor Ogilvie may have joined Gillingham from Tottenham but he doesn’t see the move as a step backwards.
He has previously enjoyed two loan spells with Stevenage in League 2, which is where all of his Football League experience has come from to date.
It is from that level which the young defender feels he is making progression, rather than the Premier League.
He said: “I learned most of my trade at Stevenage and enjoyed it. This is definitely a step up for me because I haven’t played any first-team football at Spurs.
“It is definitely a step up from Stevenage but it will be good. The gaffer has been good with me here.”
The left-sided defender signed a two-year deal with Spurs days before agreeing a six-month loan at Gillingham.
He said: “A loan deal was always part of the plan. It was nice to get a new deal but league experience is the main thing. Gillingham is my focus now.
“I can get out and play league football and Gillingham seems like the perfect club for that.”
Ogilvie has featured in Gillingham’s first two games and felt they gave a good account of themselves in the week, losing 2-0 at Championship side Reading in their Carabao Cup tie.
He said: “It was a tough game. They kept the ball well but we kept our shape and stayed in the game for as long as we could.
“It was a good goal from them for the first one. We could have scored as well.
“It was a good 60 minutes and then when they got the goal, it was a bit of a blow but we did all right.
“We still had some young players in there, with experience as well, with Greg Cundle up front, making his first start, and Ben Chappers (Chapman) off the bench as well. They were good positives, it is just a shame about the result.”
