Boss Justin Edinburgh insists his Gills team won’t be easing off when they visit Birmingham City in the Capital One Cup.
Gillingham visit unbeaten Championship side Birmingham on Tuesday night in the second round of the competition.
The Gills may be outsiders to nick a result but Edinburgh’s men won’t be going for a jolly-up.
Edinburgh said: “I told the players we’re not going there with that mentality of being a no-lose situation, that is rubbish as far as I am concerned.
“It is an opportunity to get through to the next round of the cup with financial rewards for the football club, and it’s a chance for these players to win another match.
“We don’t have the mentality of nothing to lose, it is all to gain, that’s what we are going to look to do.”
The Gills sit top of League 1 but Birmingham, with two draws and a win, have had a solid start themselves under young boss Gary Rowett.
Rowett has already said he may give some youngsters a run-out in the cup clash.
Seven Championship sides were eliminated at the first round stage and Gillingham will be hoping they too can achieve an upset.
“There is an opportunity there,” added Edinburgh. “We are playing well, respect will be given of course, because they are a Championship side and there for a reason. We saw them on Friday night and we know what qualities they have.
Doug Loft, Aaron Morris and Emmanuel Osadebe are not expected to return to the squad for the trip.
