Gillingham boss Ady Pennock is determined to secure their League 1 survival without the help of others.
Victory on Saturday against promotion-chasing Fleetwood should ensure Gills can finally breathe easy with a game to spare.
Lose and they could head to former manager Justin Edinburgh’s Northampton on the final day with relegation still on the cards.
Results went their way on Monday – meaning a 3-0 defeat to Charlton only hurt their goal difference – but Pennock doesn’t want to rely on others.
“Results were kind to us,” he said, as the Gills remained four points clear of the drop zone.
“People say ‘why do you look at results?’. They are important but we can’t keep relying on other people.
“It is a big game against Fleetwood because there is a chance that they could get automatic promotion. If we beat Fleetwood, we will be sitting much better.
“We want to stay in this division and that is what I have come here to do. We still have a good opportunity to do that.
“We are OK at home, we are better at home. Look at MK Dons and Coventry, at Charlton as well (all away from home). We are giving teams two-goal leads and we just can’t do that. At any level, it is an uphill battle.
“But we are strong at home and will have our support. They are still behind us, they have been top drawer and we need them. That is what it is all about and we look forward to Saturday.”
