Chatham’s position may look bleak but boss Paul Piggott isn’t giving up on Ryman League, Division 1 South survival.
Having failed to beat bottom side Godalming last week, Chats host Guernsey, the team immediately above them, in a lunchtime kick-off on Saturday.
The game pairs Chatham, who boast the joint-worst home record in the league, against the team with the second-worst away record.
Guernsey have proved poor travellers this season – their last six trips to the mainland have seen them win just five points.
“It was a massive missed opportunity to lose against Godalming but all is still not lost," Piggott said.
"Me, Clint Gooding and Simon Halsey will do everything we can to make sure we give ourselves every chance.”
Piggott admitted he has never been one to pore over league tables and results but says Chatham’s plight means he now is.
“We have a battle plan in the way we are going to approach things,” added Piggott. “It’s all about building players’ confidence in different areas before every training session and matches.
“Guernsey have always been the team we have targeted ever since I came to the club.
“They were one place above us then and still are and we are using the run-ins of other teams around us as part of our preparations and plans, making sure the players are aware some are tougher than ours. We will all take a little bit of hope from that.”
Piggott will check on the fitness of two players. Ryan Flack has been nursing a foot injury and Chris Saunders has an ankle problem.
Chats' game at South Park on Wednesday was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.
Meanwhile Margate's teenage midfielder Alfie Foster has joined until the end of the season in an attempt to get regular game time.
