Gillingham have signed a former Medway schoolboy on loan from Premier League Arsenal.
Twenty-year-old central defender Zech Medley, who was born in Greenwich and went to school in Gillingham, was apparently attracting interest from three Championship sides.
Despite the higher-level interest, Gills boss Steve Evans has got his man, a player who will look to fill the void left by departing skipper Max Ehmer.
The Gills, describing the deal as a real coup, say there was also a host of League 1 clubs after Medley’s signature but he’s opted to move to Priestfield on a season-long loan.
Medley, who stands at 6ft 5inch, has captained Arsenal’s under-18 side and has played for them in the Europa League. He also played for the club in the FA Cup and has featured for England at junior level.
“He is a superb addition,” said Evans.
“I would like to acknowledge the support of Mikel Arteta (the Arsenal manager) and his staff at Arsenal for agreeing that Zech should continue his education here.
“His family still live here in Gillingham and in many ways he is one of our own.”
