Loan striker Joe Quigley is the third player Gillingham have lost for the season.
Boss Justin Edinburgh revealed on Tuesday night that the young Bournemouth striker ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament at the end of Saturday’s game against Bury.
At the time the injury looked like an innocuous one and the player finished the game but scans revealed a serious problem that is going to keep the 19-year-old out for the rest of the season.
Gillingham have already seen Aaron Morris and Lee Martin suffer injuries which will keep them out for the whole campaign.
Speaking about the latest setback, after Tuesday’s draw with Swindon, boss Edinburgh said: “Unfortunately we have lost Joe Quigley for the season.
“The incident came in the game where he lost his footing in the box on Saturday and he has done his ACL.
“That was a real big blow for the group when they came in to hear that news. It is really tough to take. It was an innocuous situation and so our thoughts are with Joe.
“It’s a real tough blow for him and for us as a group to lose another team member for what looks like the whole duration of the season. It is difficult for the group to take.
“They have had some real bad blows and the personnel and we have to dust ourselves off and hope that Joe gets back onto the road to recovery very quickly and that maybe we get him back before the end of the season.”
Utility player Morris was the first to pick up a serious injury, breaking down in training during pre-season and suffering a cruciate injury for the second time in his career.
Martin’s horror injury, where he broke and dislocated his ankle, came in the pre-season match at Leyton Orient.
The Gills have also yet to field new signing Scott Wagstaff because of injury while Bradley Garmston is still out after dislocating a knee-cap during the summer.
