Gillingham took a point off the league leaders on Saturday - but boss Steve Lovell felt they did enough to take all three.

No team have beaten Luton Town at Kenilworth Road in the league this season but the Gills came close.

Twice the Gills came from behind to earn a share of the spoils but they were well in the contest throughout.

The Gills manager said: “I thought we created a lot, especially first half, we had two or three really good chances.

“Brandon Hanlan had a fantastic game, him and Tom (Eaves) up top, they caused them all kind of problems and the only thing for Brandon was that he didn’t finish the game with one or two goals, that’s the only disappointing thing.

“The rest of it, everything was positive, the way that we set up, the way that we took the game to them and created a lot of opportunities and even when we went 2-1 down we still kept going.

“We got a great equaliser from Luke O’Neill and I fancied him on free-kicks, he hadn’t had one for a while, but it was a great goal and we thoroughly deserved at least a point out of the game.”

The Gills conceded the game's opening goal just before the break, going in 1-0 down.

“I was so gutted for them,” Lovell said.

“I would have liked to have gone in goalless, I thought we should have been up. To concede just before half-time was disappointing but you have to forget it.

“Everyone was positive when we went in at half-time, everyone was saying we could win it, we were in it, they all knew how well they had done that first half.

“Second half we controlled so much of it.”

The Gills cancelled out that late first half goal with a header from Tom Eaves but then conceded again.

All was not lost, however, as O’Neill guided home a free-kick into the top corner.

“It was a tremendous goal from Luke,” said Lovell.

While Lovell was thrilled to get a point, his team had chances to nick it at the end, with O’Neill having a shot saved by the keeper’s legs and Max Ehmer getting on the end of a corner.

Lovell was content with a point.

He said: “I bet there have been a few teams who have gone there and been close to getting a win.

"I will take away the fact that we have performed really, really well against the top side and I think we should have won it, I really do believe that with the chances that we had, clear cut chances more than them.

“But if someone said ‘would you take a point against Luton?’ I would have said ‘yes, of course’.”
