Chatham boxer Robert Caswell to fight at Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge as warm-up act for the USA v UK Transatlantic Clash II event dubbed the “Battle of the Bridge”

Chelsea Football Club’s Stamford Bridge will stage a first-ever boxing show next month - and Chatham prospect Robert Caswell will be among those in action.

The ‘Battle of the Bridge’ will see 10 British fighters captained by former European champion Spencer Oliver take on 10 Americans led by Roy Jones Jr.

Caswell (11-1) has been ticking over since beating Brayan Mairena in February and received a call last week to contest a support bout at Chelsea after another fighter pulled out. He jumped at the chance.

The Medway boxer sees the event - which will take place in one of the suites at the London stadium and streamed live by FightZone - as a perfect opportunity to prepare for a potential title fight in Chatham this summer.

Caswell said: “I’ve only had a few days off since my last fight and was trying to get back out in April but nothing was coming off. I was just waiting and then last week a space opened up at this event and I was asked if I wanted to jump on.

“Luckily I was in the gym, I was fit, I could take it and it’s only a couple of weeks away now. It’s a short-notice fight but I was ready and able to take it.

“This is my career, there is no point taking months out of the gym from each fight and trying to get fit and lose weight again. It makes my life easier if I stay fit and on it.

“This is quite a decent show to be on. I really wanted to get one in before July and was running out of options. This is perfect.”

Caswell was waiting on confirmation of an opponent this week.

He said: “Hopefully I get a half-decent opponent with a winning record or a 50-50. I will have to take what I get and then hopefully a title fight in July.

“This gives me a bit of space before that fight in case I picked up a cut or niggle and then I’d be up against it. This would give me time to be ready in July.”

Michael Webber-Kane will be among the UK fighters in action on the show. He’s the only man Caswell has lost to since turning pro, taking the Southern Area super featherweight belt when they met last February.

Caswell’s won his last three since then and after fighting at Chelsea he’ll be preparing for what he hopes will be a hometown show.

There are talks about hosting a fight at Chatham Town’s Bauvill Stadium and the British Boxing Board of Control have already given the venue the green light. The area belt might not be available, as Numan Hussain and Frank Arnold fought out a draw when they met for the title last month and look set to have a rematch. There are still other options open to the Chatham boxer, however, including a potential eliminator fight.

The USA v UK Transatlantic Clash II event at Chelsea takes place on Friday, April 4.

Fellow Chatham boxer Grant Dennis (19-8) will be in action later this month. The 41-year-old fights at York Hall next Sunday (March 30) against Kevin Reavell at middleweight in a Top Tier Boxing event.
