Gillingham’s very own FA Cup winners will be giving West Ham’s Upton Park one last memory.
The Royal Engineers’ football team, who play home games at the Brompton Barracks, will be taking on Upton Park FC on Monday.
It is likely to be the last match ever played at the famous ground. From next season, West Ham will be moving to the Olympic Stadium.
Captain Glen Lishman, who is based with the Engineers in Maidstone, hopes fans will enjoy a celebration of FA Cup heritage.
The match will see two sides who played in the first ever FA Cup competition back in 1872 going head to head. The Engineers were the 1875 winners.
Lishman, who acts as the team’s director of football, said: “It’s a one-off game and looks like being the last one in the stadium. It will be a festival, a celebration of Upton Park played by two teams with so much heritage.”
The Royal Engineers, who are sponsored by Mid-Kent College, play fellow military teams on Friday mornings, often watched at Brompton by fans eager to see one of the country’s teams of the past.
Monday’s game at West Ham is free to watch with a charity collection being made on the day in aid of the Bobby Moore Family Fund and the Army Benevolent Fund.
The action gets under way from 1.15pm with a Generation Cup match between the two sides, featuring veterans as well as youngsters. The main match kicks off at 3pm.
