Old Colfeians 7 Medway 38: Regional 2 South East match report

John Sipawa was in fine form as Medway began the new year with a 38-7 Regional 2 South East victory at Old Colfeians.

The visitors, beaten in their final game of 2024 at home to lowly Gravesend, quickly returned to winning ways with Sipawa combining with Max Bullock for the first of his four tries, Harrison Fermor converting the opener after 10 minutes.

The Old Boys then forced the away side on the back foot, their inside-centre making a break, while Josh Knight was forced into a try-stopping tackle on the line.

Great teamwork from the backs got Medway their second try. Bullock fed captain Antony Clement who then found Ben Dance, with Conor Chalmers making it over the line for an unconverted score and a 12-0 half-time lead.

Colfes made a good start to the second half, their forwards forcing their way over the line in the first 10 minutes, but their converted try was as good as it got for them.

Instead man of the match Sipawa took centre stage, running in his second try from 40m after Noah Hyde’s good work. Fermor’s conversion made it 19-7, and then, from a scrum, Sipawa was quickest to a loose ball for his third touchdown.

Bullock added his name to the scoresheet when he kicked to clear, caught his own ball and charged 40m down the pitch to the whitewash. And with three minutes to go, Sipawa capped a fine individual display with the final say.

Fourth-placed Medway welcome eighth-spot Old Reigatians on Saturday.
