Gillingham manager Justin Edinburgh isn’t carried away with their position at the top of League 1 – but he’s not ignoring it either.

Edinburgh has belief in the squad he has assembled at Priestfield and hasn’t put any barriers on what they could achieve this season after they went top of the table following a 2-0 home win over Wigan.

Edinburgh said: “You have to look at it 10-12 games into the season. You can see it starting to take shape then.

“We are doing well. I am not going to play it down or underestimate this group.

“They are playing very well, they are deserving to win games and earning the right to win.

“If they continue to do that, then who knows where that can take us?”

The victory against Wigan extended Gillingham’s unbeaten run to five games since the start of the season.

Both Wigan and Sheffield United, who the Gills beat on the opening day, were among the favourites to win the League 1 title and Edinburgh admitted the way Gills have started has even surprised him.

He said: “We knew it would be tough and for me to say I knew we would have this many points would mean having a vivid imagination.

“There is a belief and I have a really good group. I can only echo what I say to them, which is as long as they continue to work as they are, there are things they can achieve.

“They are answering a lot of questions. This is only a start and we have to try and maintain that. The points return right now is fantastic.”
