Caretaker boss Matt Solly wants Chatham's players to enjoy themselves for as long as he and club-mate Jack Jeffery are in temporary charge of first-team affairs.
Solly was appointed caretaker manager following Kevin Watson's resignation last weekend and he led the Chats to a 4-1 Kent Senior Cup win over Ramsgate on Tuesday.
The midfielder hasn't played since New Year's Day, when his ankle was so badly broken by a foul tackle that Chatham's game against Thurrock had to be abandoned.
Solly's been a regular at Maidstone Road ever since and he's pleased to have been given the chance to help Chats climb away from the Ryman League Division 1 South relegation zone.
He said: "When you’re watching as an injured player it’s horrible. I’ve had enough of watching now but being on the management side, it’s different because I'm involved.
"I just want to get back playing. I’ve got an appointment next week to see the surgeon and hopefully I’ll get the go-ahead to start light training.
"My target is to be playing again before Christmas."
Solly admitted he was surprised to see Watson walk away after more than four years in charge.
He said: "It was a bit of a shock. It's never nice when something like that happens.
"After the game they asked me and Jack Jeffery if we’d do it together. We made sure everyone was available over the weekend and got a team together for Tuesday.
"We didn’t work on anything but we put a team together and just told them to enjoy it.
"It was a bit difficult with everything going on, Kev resigning, but it was a good result and a good performance."
Chatham are at home to Carshalton on Saturday, kick-off 3pm.
