Stuart Nelson is being linked with a move to Southend United.
The goalkeeper was offered a new deal with the Gills at the end of the season but has yet to commit.
It is understood Nelson is currently on holiday in the States and the Southend Echo are reporting that he could be on their radar.
The 34-year-old has been with the Gills since 2012 and has clocked up over 150 league appearances for the club.
Nelson has been a popular figure among fans at Priestfield and has often spoken of his affinity for the club.
He was an ever present for the Gills last season after winning over boss Justin Edinburgh, who had originally said the keeper could leave.
Edinburgh is now keen to tie up a new deal with the stopper.
Speaking last week, the Gills boss said: “We are talking and I don’t think we are a million miles away.”
Southend boss Phil Brown hasn’t named Nelson as his target but the Echo quote him as saying: “The goalkeeper may take a little bit longer because he’s away on holiday at the moment.
“(His) club have also offered him a contract, so we do have other options lined up if he decides to stay with them.”
Southend are also hopeful of signing former Gills winger Jermaine McGlashan, who was released at the end of the season.
Josh Wright has also yet to sign a new deal with the Gills and he is also away on holiday, in Florida. Edinburgh remains hopeful that both will sign on.
He said: “All of our out of contract players did very well last year. We know and understand there will be interest.
“Everyone has a value and we have to make sure as a football club we stick to it but on the other side we want to keep our best players at the club and we have to find a solution.”
