An array of sporting stars will help celebrate Medway’s sporting success at next month’s Medway Sports Awards.
The awards, organised by Medway Council and supported by the Medway Messenger, will celebrate the achievements of local clubs, teams, individuals and coaches during the past four years.
Former England footballer Chris Waddle, who played in the 1990 World Cup, will be a guest at the awards on Friday, December 16 at Rochester Corn Exchange.
Commonwealth gymnastics champion Georgia-Mae Fenton will also be a special guest at the awards.
In 2018 Fenton won a gold medal on the uneven bars and a team silver medal at the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Cost. In this year’s 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham she won gold in the same categories.
She also won a silver medal at the 2022 World Championships in Liverpool, securing her country's spot in the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Jamaican Olympic gymnast and sports presenter Danusia Francis-Reid will compere the awards ceremony.
Francis-Reid was a reserve for the GB Olympic team in 2012 and finally made it to the delayed Tokyo Olympics with Jamaica. Unfortunately, she tore her ACL before competing and did a short bar routine to become an Olympian.
Previous winners of the Medway Sports Awards include gold medal winning Olympic hockey goalkeeper Maddie Hinch, Paralympic gold medal winning skier Charlotte Evans and professional boxer Karol Itauma.
Cllr Howard Doe, deputy leader of Medway Council and Portfolio Holder for Community Services, said: “We are delighted that sporting stars Danusia Francis-Reid, Chris Waddle and Georgia-Mae Fenton will be attending the Medway Sports Awards next month.
"The awards highlight Medway’s fantastic athletes, coaches and volunteers as well as professional and community clubs. I look forward to celebrating this year’s nominees and their successes.”
