Gillingham striker Tom Eaves cannot shoulder goalscoring burden alone, says manager Steve Lovell

Gillingham boss Steve Lovell doesn’t want his side to be so reliant on Tom Eaves.

Eaves took his overall tally to 13 on Saturday, scoring late on in the 3-1 defeat to Luton, and almost half of the Gills’ league goals have been scored by the big striker.

Brandon Hanlan has got three league goals to his name but that’s the best of the rest, with Elliott List scoring two of his four in cup competitions.

Lovell wants another regular goalscorer aside from Eaves, just like his weekend rivals Luton.

He said: “We can’t rely on one person to get goals but that is the way we are and that is what I have to deal with.

“Tom Eaves is scoring goals and it was a really good finish but they (Luton) have got players all over their team who are scoring goals.

"Tom is our top scorer and the next one might only have three goals. It is something we know we need and we always have done.”

It’s not been through a lack of effort, but Lovell said: “You have to have the ability and the talent to go and do that. We have got that in the squad but they are young lads, they are learning their trade.

“To go and get out and out goalscorers is hard.

“(Luton) have some really good forward players and midfielders in their team, so have we, and for most of the game we matched them.

“At the start of the game I wasn’t concerned and even at 1-0 I thought second half if we got the next goal we could go and win, I really did.”

Despite creating, only Eaves could stick the ball in the net.

“It was frustrating,” said Lovell, whose side had failed to register a goal in their previous two league outings.

“We have got to start taking those chances or half chances that we get.

“If you are relying on one person to do that then it’s not going to happen. They have to stand up and start scoring the goals.”

Lovell brought List back into the attack at the weekend, starting him alongside Eaves. He has found the net in the cup games against Crawley and Hartlepool.

Lovell said: “He has done reasonably well and he kept going.

“Listy has been on form and scoring them and I thought he had a good game, him and Tom. They caused them problems, but at the end of the day it’s 3-1 and we’ve lost the game.

“They gave everything but there are just certain areas where we feel (we can improve) especially in the final third.

"Elliott had a decent game but never really had any opportunities. They all fell to someone else.

"He will come good, he is a young lad. He will keep going.”
