Gillingham have completed a new deal to keep last season’s player-of-the-year at the club.
Mark Byrne has ended a summer of speculation by signing a new two-year contract.
Byrne swept the board at the end of season awards, picking up the supporters’ vote as their star man from the 2017/18 campaign, while also claiming goal-of-the-season and the players' player trophy.
His deal expired at the end of the last season following two successful campaigns with the club.
The 29-year-old Irish midfielder joined the Gills in the summer of 2016, re-uniting him with then-manager Justin Edinburgh, after the pair had worked together at Newport County.
He played 35 games in his first season and was a regular again last year, firstly under Ady Pennock and then Steve Lovell, who was determined to keep his star midfielder.
“I made no secret of the fact that Mark was one of my priorities in terms of keeping him at the club over the summer," said Gills manager Lovell.
“He won Player of the Year last season, and rightly so after putting in a number of excellent performances. It’s great to have him on board.”
Byrne has played 73 league games for the Gills, scoring some memorable goals, including one against Premier League Watford in the League Cup and a stunner against Bristol Rovers last season, rifling home an effort on the volley.
