Mark Stimson remains convinced he’s the man to turn Gillingham's fortunes round despite seeing his side falter once more.
Saturday's woeful 3-0 defeat to last season’s Conference play-off winners Exeter was another blow to his aspirations.
The defeat was Gills’ third straight loss on their travels after losing at Aldershot (2-1) and Shrewsbury (7-0) but Stimson is not giving up.
“I’ll never lose faith in my ability as a manager because I know what I want my team to do,” he said. “It’s just getting the players to actually do that.
“I’m very confident. I came here to try and keep the team in Division 1 (League 1) and we got relegated. People said the chairman should have changed it then but he said 'no, keep going with it,' and we will until we’re told differently.”
Out of the near-5,000 fans at Exeter, 407 were there to support Gillingham and Stimson acknowledged that they deserved better.
“They’ve spent a lot of money to come down and back the players and I thank them for that but we’ve just got to change that away record around,” he said.
“Out of the 400-odd, 399 will probably say ‘get rid of the manager, he’s not good enough and he hasn’t brought in the players that are good enough to get us out of this league’.
“I will argue with that because I think I will be the man. All I would say to them is keep supporting the team because they need it – probably more so now than ever.”
