Gillingham boss Peter Taylor has backed Cody McDonald to finish the season with 20 goals.

The front-man may have drawn a blank for the third weekend running but Taylor believes his striker will come good.

Taylor said: “It’s a spell where all of a sudden it’s not going in. I have no doubt in my mind that Cody will have 20 goals by the end of the season, that’s how he is.

“He will keep going. He might have another blank sheet but I am sure that by the end of the season he will be notching his goals. He believes it will turn and I believe it will turn.”

McDonald, with four goals in 11 games, said last week his chances were fewer this season than last but there were no shortage of opportunities on Saturday.

“We need to play like we did in the second half (on Saturday) to give him those chances,” said Taylor.

“But he also does know that he has to work hard on his own game as well. I don’t want him just to rely on chances that everyone else creates for him, I want him to get some himself.

“He has to be a good centre-forward, that’s what he has got to be. He is willing, and people at Coventry (his former club) said the same to him. He knows what we are trying to do and he will do it.”
