Defeat on Saturday left Gillingham sitting fifth from bottom in League 1.
And boss Peter Taylor admitted that more performances like the one his team produced against Scunthorpe could land them in trouble.
They were comfortably beaten 3-0 at Priestfield and Taylor will be hoping his team find some form to avoid another season of struggle.
Taylor said: “You don’t know what could happen and if you play like that (regularly) it will be a season like it. Hopefully that’s not the case.
“I don’t think we are far away from being a decent team, but we didn’t look it on Saturday.”
Gillingham have lost their last three league games and have won just one of their last seven. But Taylor still believes in his squad.
He said: “I know what they are capable of doing and I would hope they are disappointed with the standard that they have done. I think they know they are better than that.”
