Caretaker Gillingham boss Peter Taylor expects to be in the job for at least one more game.

The Gills head to Colchester on Tuesday night for their second Checkatrade Trophy group match.

Next weekend the Gills face Portsmouth at home, live on Sky Sports, and chairman Paul Scally may have a new man in charge by then.

Taylor said: “I saw the chairman (after Saturday’s game) and I am probably expected Tuesday but I am not going any further than that.

“You never know. It’s up to the chairman to decide whatever he wants to do. I am in charge of Tuesday for now.”

Taylor has overseen the last two matches, a goalless draw at home to Scunthorpe and a 1-0 defeat at Blackburn Rovers on Saturday.

While performances have improved on the one at Rochdale that got former head coach Ady Pennock the sack, Taylor still knows they have much to do.

He said: “If I am doing it then the players will be as prepared as they can be and they will have to get on with it.

“Hopefully we can go to Colchester and get a result, get some goals or something. Just getting a goal would be nice, then try and get a bit more belief that way.

“I think the last two performances have been okay. To me they have been more encouraging.

“I thought there were some excellent performances from the players. They must have felt a lot better than they did from (Rochdale) because last Saturday was nothing like that. That is good for them.

“We need a little luck in the right areas but looking at them, I think they are working exceptionally hard to deserve a bit of luck.”
