Gillingham striker Luke Norris on the goal-of-the-season strike against Sheffield United he never got to enjoy

Luke Norris never got to enjoy his special goal at Bramall Lane properly.

The forward volleyed home for the Gills with seven minutes left last season, putting his side ahead, only to see the Blades fight back to win with two late goals.

It was a strike that earned him the goal-of-the-season award but this time around he’ll be hoping to prolong the matchday celebrations and leave with maximum points.

Recalling the afternoon back in September 2014, he said: “I came on at 0-0 and I think that was the only shot we had on target all game.

“We defended excellently throughout the whole game and managed to get the goal but I couldn’t enjoy it that much, though, because we ended up losing the game.

“After all that hard work we had put in through the whole game, to concede two late goals was horrible. It wasn’t a nice feeling considering away from home we needed the three points at the time. It was just a shame we couldn’t win.”

The 22-year-old striker at least got to enjoy the last meeting against Sheffield United, at Priestfield.

His early goal, timed at eight minutes, got the Gills off to a flyer on the opening day. The game ended with a 4-0 win for Justin Edinburgh’s men.

The two goals couldn’t have been much different.

His goal at Bramall Lane saw him knock the ball over the head of a defender before volleying it over the keeper on his left foot whereas his goal at Priestfield was bundled in on the goal-line.

He said: “I remember it just bobbled in off me. They all count. I was wrestling with the keeper and it just hit me.

“We were rewarded with our hard work from the pre-season in that game. We were like a bat out of hell. It was a good performance, every player in the game was a high rating and when you get performances like that, you normally turn over teams.

“To have turned over Sheffield United, a team who were possibly favourites for the title at the time, it was a great start to the season.”
