Steve Lovell is confident of getting Gillingham climbing back up the League 1 table.

The Gills dropped into the bottom four on Saturday after a 4-2 home defeat against Peterborough.

It’s now seven games without a win in the league for Lovell’s men, but the manager was upbeat after their positive showing against high-flyers Peterborough.

“We will be fine, we will get out of it,” said boss Lovell.

“If we didn’t perform on Saturday I would be miserable. I am miserable because we haven’t got a result but not about the performance.

“I will take a lot of heart and a lot of positives out of it. It gives us a lot of hope.

“I have been critical of the boys in the last few weeks, quite rightly so because they deserve it. I would be the first to give them credit when they deserve it and they deserve credit, for most of the season they have done it.

“That was my 50th game in charge and there have not been many where they haven’t given everything.”

Lovell insists there is no pressure, despite the run of results.

“There is only the pressure that other people put on us,” he said.

“We don’t put any pressure on ourselves and I don’t put any pressure on the players. It is a game of football, we go out there and give our best every week.

“It is a pressurised situation anyway and if you are top of the league there is more pressure on them to come here and get a result.

“Our boys are fantastic, they have given everything, we have gone seven games without a win in the league but you wouldn’t have thought it in that first half.

"All credit to them, they are really having a go and they will continue to.”

Captain Gabriel Zakuani, a former Peterborough favourite, knows results are needed, despite the better showing.

He tweeted: "The effort put in by the team was incredible, the fans were superb. The performance was very good but we need to start winning and getting the points on the board!"

Goalscoring midfielder Mark Byrne, meanwhile, tweeted: "Play like that every week and we will get results."

Gillingham will play Bostik Premier side Folkestone Invicta in a friendly on Tuesday, with a 7.45pm kick off.
