Medway and Maidstone athletes won five medals at the annual county combined events championships at Bromley at the weekend, writes Alan Newman.
Joseph Thurgood is the new under-17 men’s octathlon champion with 3,616 points. Harriet Day (3,423) took the under-17 women’s heptathlon gold from club colleague Priya Kanda (3,273) and Vanessa Elver (3,165) of Dartford Harriers.
Natasha Scott (2,420) and Jade Oni (2,397) were the opposition to winner Rebecca Hawkins (2,716) of Bexley in the under-15 girls' pentathlon. Ashleigh West (M&M, 2,185) and Elle Wastell (Medway Phoenix, 2,165) were fourth and fifth while Bobbie Cornelius (Swale Combined, 1,964) won the under-20 women’s heptathlon and Claire Capon (Dartford Harriers, 3,756) the senior heptathlon.
Meanwhile, in the under-13 county championships, the boys’ 100m was won by M&M's Joshua Oshunrinde (12.33sec). Ernie Lake (Tonbridge, 25.70) took the 200m final in a new championship-record and Archie May (Dartford Harriers, 4min53.26sec) won the 1,500m, with Luke Stringer (M&M, 5.00.68) just outside the five-minute threshold.
Luke Cressey (Thanet, 1.60m) broke the championship best in the high jump and Matt Hughes (Judd School, 5.34) defeated 25 starters in the long jump. Christopher Scrivens (Judd School) was a double gold winner at discus (24.87) and hammer (29.29).
Matilda Hall (Tonbridge, 2.29.00) took a narrow victory in the girls’ 800m and Elizabeth Miller (Tonbridge, 3.57.25) succeeded at 1,200m. Lauren Farley (M&M, 12.21) picked up bronze in a hotly-contested 70m hurdles final, behind Jade Curtis (Ashford, 12.00) and Eleanor McGrath (Tonbridge, 12.03).
Beatrice Fury (M&M, 14.15.25) walked 2,000m to silver behind Suki Ly (Cambridge Harriers, 12.10.94) and there was more silver for M&M’s Lucy Maunders (1.35) behind Jade Curtis (Ashford, 1.45) in the high jump.
Curtis (4.60) took the long jump title from M&M’s Zara Edeleanu (4.30) and Lauren Farley (4.14). Kirsty-Anne Ebbage (Tonbridge) secured three titles in the shot (8.66), discus (26.44) and hammer (26.67) – with a championship record in the latter – and the javelin champion also came from Tonbridge as Hana Yun-Stevens threw 30.75.
