O’Brien played under Harris at Millwall and while there was also managed by Gillingham’s director of football Kenny Jackett.
Londoner O’Brien has been keen to move closer to his family in the south after making only six substitute appearances in the league for Shrewsbury since his summer switch from Portsmouth.
He’ll be hoping a move to the Gills can rekindle his best form. He hasn’t found the net this season.
O’Brien played 188 league games for Millwall, scoring 34 goals. He went onto play for Sunderland, scoring 11 goals in the 2021/22 season in League 1, including a goal against the Gills at Priestfield.
He’s previously scored goals at Championship level and is another experienced campaigner for the Gills as they look to maintain their League 2 safety, ahead of what the club hope will be a promotion push next season.
O’Brien was the 10th signing of the January window and the second new signing on the final day of the window.
He looks set to be involved on Saturday against Crawley Town - one of his former loan clubs. He played a handful of times for them a decade ago.
Gillingham have also signed Eastleigh striker Tristan Abrahams on loan.
The 24-year-old former Newport and Carlisle striker has scored four goals in 28 appearances for the National League side this season.
