Gillingham play Crawley Town in the EFL Trophy on Tuesday at Priestfield

Gillingham are back in action on Tuesday but the EFL Trophy match is of little concern for manager Steve Evans.

The Gills kick off their Trophy campaign with a home game against one of Evans’ former teams, Crawley Town.

Evans wants a win, obviously, but he won’t be losing any sleep over the outcome of the midweek match.

When asked about the game, he said: “I had wonderful times at Crawley, there are some wonderful people in that town, my brother is still there. We will respect them and do what we need to do.

“I don’t hide it, the competition has no interest to me, none.

“Do I want to win the game come Tuesday at half past five, I want to win. The Carabao Cup had no interest to me but when it came I wanted to win.

“We will make changes and we are playing a good side, probably when it comes to resources they have more than us, it isn’t little old Crawley is it?”

The Gills face three Trophy matches, with games to follow against Ipswich Town (October 6) and Arsenal under-21s on November 10.

Evans is focussed on Saturday, however, with their League 1 opener against Hull City on the horizon.

While the manager has no interest in the Trophy, it will at least give him chance to get extra minutes into his players, freely admitting they aren’t as well prepared as they should be at this stage of pre-season, having had less time than normal to prepare and returning after a six-month break in action.

Jordan Graham missed the Carabao Cup game against Coventry City with a strain and Evans would like to see him involved on Tuesday.

“Jordan is a really good player so we want him available to help us,” the manager said.

Young goalkeeper Joe Walsh and midfielder Henry Woods look set to be involved but Evans has said teenage forward Toby Bancroft is heading out on loan, commenting: “Young Toby is not ready for the first team group, but he has the potential.

“We will make a number of changes for Tuesday, then we will get on the training ground Thursday and Friday to prepare for a game against a team who were in the Premier League not long ago.”

Tuesday's game will be played behind closed doors. Kick off is at 5.30pm.
