Gillingham goalkeeper Jake Turner was thrilled to enjoy another shutout on Tuesday night.

The Gills started the season with four successive 1-0 wins in League 2 but goals against have become more frequent in recent weeks, including a recent 4-1 loss against Walsall.

Turner had to be at his best to claim his sixth clean sheet of the season, with a 1-0 win at Swindon.

“The clean sheet is massive for the lads,” said the 24-year-old.

“It’s been a few games without one, we’ve conceded a few too many goals and it’s good to get back to a clean sheet and winning ways.

“We were solid. We have conceded a few too many goals in the last few games so it was good to get back to winning ways and clean-sheet ways. We started off (the season) with a few clean sheets and it’s good to get back there.

“The lads were quality. It was a big three points, we probably should have scored a few more but at the end of the day we got a win.”

Turner pulled off some big saves on Tuesday to ensure the Gills would win by scoring once.

“I am there to just help the team out as the last man,” said the typically modest keeper.

“The lads defended the box excellently, they won most of the headers and the balls that got whipped into the box. I knew I was going to be called upon against that team and luckily I could help out a bit!

“I am the last man so I have to be as calm as I can and it is nervous when they are putting the balls in the box but the lads dug in so well, from up top to the back.”

Turner knew it was a big one for the fans, against their long-time rivals.

He said: “It was a big game for the club and thankfully we got the win!

“We knew whoever we were playing we had to bounce back but with the amount of fans cheering us on, you do feel that when you play.

“The game was huge for the fans and to give them back a win, a much-needed one as well on the road, was massive for us.”
