Gillingham striker John Akinde admits he should have scored more this season but was happy enough with his weekend double.
Akinde agreed his performance at Rochdale was his best one yet for the Gills after scoring twice and helping his side to a 4-1 away win.
The striker said: “I want to score as many goals as possible. I possibly should have scored six or seven with the chances that I have had but I am happy with the two.
“I just have to keep getting in the positions to keep scoring those goals and take the chances when they come.
“I was happy with how I played, definitely, I think I have had some decent performances this season but that was probably the best and it was good to score the goals as well. Hopefully there are many more to come.”
Akinde had only scored once before this season, hitting the winner against Crewe at the start of November. Last season he scored in the 3-2 win at Blackpool.
It’s now four in 34 for the striker in his time with Gillingham, having made his debut for the club in last season’s 2-2 draw at Rochdale.
“It was good to go back with two goals but mainly it’s about the three points,” he said.
“They are a good side, they like to play football, but we made it difficult for them.
“I didn’t feel like they were going to hurt us that much and I am just glad that we scored the goals we deserved. We dominated the game.
“We were very determined. We wanted to three points as you could see on the pitch. Everyone worked so hard.
“We were really structured, really organised, made it hard for them to break us down and punished them when we had the ball.”
