Gillingham defender Leon Legge felt their new attacking approach deserved to be rewarded on Saturday.
Centre-back Legge was recalled into the side by Gills’ caretaker management team but an injury-time goal from Port Vale condemned them to a 2-1 defeat.
He said: “It is a bit of a killer when you concede a goal late on and it was a game where we definitely deserved a point.
“It was end to end, played in dodgy conditions and it was like back in my old non-league days. It must have been an enjoyable game to watch.
“We had a meeting on Saturday and they (the management team) said we were going to go after teams, we are not just going to sit off, and everyone responded. We pressed high and we got a lot of joy out of it.
“We are creating chances and we got a decent goal out of it, maybe we could have had one or two more, but that is what it is about, enjoying playing.
“We went with a different system and we created a lot of chances. That is why we feel a little bit down because we thought we could get something.”
The Gills conceded early on but that was cancelled out by Cody McDonald’s 31 minute goal.
A point eluded them, however, after conceding in stoppage time.
Legge said: “We haven’t had a lot of time to work on the formation but the response (to conceding) was good and we came back straight away.
“There was a time in the first half when they couldn’t get out of their box.
“There are a lot of positives to take from the game. We definitely deserved to go away with a point and that’s football.”
Legge is now hoping to keep his place for Tuesday night’s JPT match against Bristol City.
“I hope I have done enough,” he said.
“I didn’t know why I was dropped in the first place. I still don’t.”
