Visiting manager Russell Martin was frustrated his MK Dons team couldn’t deal with ‘the Gillingham weapon.’
Dons boss Martin had prepared his side to deal with long throws from Gills defender Ryan Jackson but was angered that they didn’t heed his warnings.
Gillingham made the most of Jackson’s ability to get the ball into the penalty area with a long throw and two of the goals on Tuesday, in a 3-2 win for the Gills, came from those set pieces.
“We completely dominated and we should walk away with three points,” said Martin, who added that he was “disappointed and angry” about the defeat.
“We gave them a penalty from a long throw and a third goal from a long throw. If we hadn't of prepared for that as a group and spoke about it I would cut the guys a bit of slack but we knew it was big weapon for them.
“I am angry. Harry Darling and Andrew Surman had a mix up for the second goal (allowing Vadaine Oliver to score), those things happen. But the two long throws, we beat ourselves. We can’t come here and put in a performance in like that and get beaten by two long throw-ins. It is not good enough. For large parts the guys were outstanding, we were really good.
“Gillingham are really good at what they do but we are beating ourselves. If a team out play us and out perform us you have to hold our hands up but that wasn’t the case at all.”
