Gillingham manager Steve Lovell hoping to have Regan Charles-Cook back for Peterborough match

Regan Charles-Cook’s expected return this weekend is a timely boost for Gillingham boss Steve Lovell.

Charles-Cook was a key player during the early part of the season but his hamstring injury coincided with a dip in performances from Lovell’s men.

The 21-year-old was back in full training this week, looking to help get the Gills back on track.

Lovell said: “I think we have missed him, he gives me a chance of playing a system that I want to play and one I have always wanted to play here.

“The lack of having certain players available to play in certain positions has stopped me from playing the system I like to play. We would like to get back to the way we started the season, which I think is our best way of playing.”

The Gills are up against high-flyers Peterborough this Saturday, a team who up until their defeat last week to Plymouth were sitting top of League 1 after an unbeaten start to the season.

Lovell won’t be worrying about that, however, providing he has an injury-free week.

“I am hoping this week we get through unscathed,” he said.

“I want to be able to come in and say, ‘this is the team boys, let's go out and really have a go at them’.

“I really believe that if we can get the right personnel out there, defend properly, get the right people in the right areas and finish off what we create then I believe we can do it.”
