Chatham Town boss Paul Piggott says his players will keep working hard

Chatham Town will continue to chase every point, says boss Paul Piggott.

A 3-0 defeat to South Park means their chances of escaping the Ryman League, Division 1 South relegation zone are now all-but over.

Chats would need to win all four of their remaining games and hope Guernsey lose all of theirs to pull clear.

Other than that happening, their only hopes of survival would rest in the hands of the misfortune of others.

With relegation and promotion issues still up in the air, there is still an outside chance Chats could stay up even if they finish third from bottom.

Ground gradings are yet to be formalised and a third-from-bottom finish may be enough to save the Chats.

It’s an unlikely scenario but while there is a chance, Chats boss Piggott and his men won’t stop fighting.

He said: “We have spoken about it (a possible reprieve) and if there is a chance, then we have to keep fighting.

“If we can’t finish the season fourth from bottom (outside of the relegation places), then we will try and finish third from bottom and see what luck comes our way.

“There could be a chance and we are determined to keep going right until the last kick, whatever the situation.

“It’s a long shot but we will keep working hard and going to the end.

“The lads are getting paid to do a job and they will be doing it to the best of their abilities until the end of the season.”

Chats – with a record of one win in their last 19 games – have four games of their season left and are back in action on Saturday at lowly Chipstead.

Monday’s defeat leaves them 11 points adrift of Guernsey.

Meanwhile, Chatham have re-signed Luke Butler, who was recently with Hastings.
