Wednesday night’s EFL Cup outing at Tottenham could have come at a price.
Gillingham keeper Jonathan Bond and striker Jay Emmanuel-Thomas both picked up injuries in the 5-0 loss and were substituted.
Reading loan keeper Bond limped off with a groin injury, just 15 minutes into the third round match at White Hart Lane and was replaced by Stuart Nelson.
Boss Justin Edinburgh said: “He felt his groin, a twinge in his groin on the first kick that he made in the game and it continually got worse.
“We didn’t want to take a chance and for him to let himself and his team-mates down and so we made a change although it was one we didn’t want to make.
“Stuart, his replacement, is a capable player at our level and that made no difference. He made saves and didn’t really have a chance with the goals and I don’t think Bond would have had, either.”
Emmanuel-Thomas was replaced after suffering a knee injury, following a heavy fall.
Edinburgh said: “His knee went under him and we didn’t want to take a risk.
“The injuries are disappointing, more so than anything really but we will assess that.”
Gillingham host League 1’s bottom club Coventry on Saturday.
