Boss Peter Taylor felt that making Cody McDonald Gillingham captain for the trip to Coventry made sense.
McDonald was returning to his former club and on Friday night he was the oldest player in the outfield team, at 28.
He took over from Callum Davies, who had worn the armband in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy first round match at Stevenage.
“I knew Cody wasn’t going to play 90 minutes against Stevenage and that is one of the reasons I went for Callum,” said Taylor.
“Cody would have been determined to score a goal anyway but maybe he was even more determined to score against Coventry, I just thought it fitted.”
He is the fourth Gills player to captain the side this season. Both skipper Doug Loft and vice-captain Danny Kedwell are currently injured.
“I think we’ve got some sensible experienced players in the squad and it is good for the players,” said Taylor.
