Gillingham are understood to be interested in Wolves winger Jordan Graham.
The 24-year-old could be the answer for boss Steve Evans, who is looking for options out wide.
Graham made the switch to Wolves from Aston Villa in 2015 and has had loans with Oxford, Fulham and Ipswich Town since then.
He was expected to spend this season with Bulgarian side Lokomotiv Plovdiv but that was ended because of an issue with FIFA clearance.
His only two appearances for Wolves this season came in the EFL Trophy.
The winger, who plays predominantly on the right but can also do a job on the opposite flank, impressed when he first joined Wolves but fell out of favour following an injury. He has played 14 league games for the club, the last coming in December 2017.
Graham played against the Gills last season, while on loan for Oxford, a match where current boss Evans was apparently present.
Gillingham already have five loan players on their books, the maximum they can name in a matchday squad at one time, and would prefer a move for Graham to be a permanent one.
It's unlikely any of their current loanees would be made permanent during the current window.
Evans is hoping to get a couple of new faces in before the transfer deadline on Friday night.
He said: “We are trying really hard to do a couple of bits before Friday. We are trying to get that balance in our squad.
“There might be the odd one or two who go out as well. If they have a definite option to go somewhere else and play every week, if it was my son I would want him playing.”
The Gills brought in John Akinde before last weekend, a move that was helped financially by the departure of Mark Marshall.
Evans said: “With Mark Marshall it just came down to how many games are we starting him, how many minutes is he getting on the pitch.
“Marshy did well when he came for us but Marshy was saying ‘am I going to be getting any more game time?’ We didn’t see it changing.”
Marshall joined Northampton Town on Saturday and could make his debut for them tonight (Tuesday) against Scunthorpe United.
