Gillingham handed Josh Wright a new two-year deal this week and could also offer him the captaincy.
The majority of Gills fans would welcome the decision to let Wright lead the side on the field for the next two years.
He has already worn the captain’s armband under boss Justin Edinburgh, who will now decide on whether the 26-year-old is the man for the job on a permanent basis.
Edinburgh needs to choose a new captain now Doug Loft and John Egan have departed.
Speaking before Wright signed, Edinburgh clearly values the midfielder on and off the pitch.
He said: “He is an outstanding candidate (for the captaincy), a natural leader and he showed that through the times he was captain last season."
An online poll at kentonline.co.uk saw 64% of readers backing the midfielder to be skipper.
Wright – a play-off winner with the Gills in 2009 – was the last of the three out of contract players Edinburgh wanted to sign and follows Aaron Morris and Stuart Nelson in putting pen to paper on two-year deals.
Following the completion of the deal, Wright said: “I’m delighted to have signed.
“There was only one place I wanted to be playing football next season and that was at Gillingham.
“I love it at the club. The manager has been fantastic, the chairman has been spot-on with the contract process and I have a special bond with the fans, who have given me great support during my time here.
“I am looking forward to the next two years at the club.”
