The pictures said it all. Josh Wright may not be wearing the captain’s armband anymore but it hasn’t taken away any of his passion.
He was able to celebrate scoring twice for the Gills last Saturday at League 1 leaders Sheffield United.
Wright said: “I’m a winner and passionate. I have passion for the game and for the club and will always have that, whether I am captain or not. I hope that rubs off on the other players.
“It’s the type of person I am in training and in games, wherever it is in whatever aspect of life and that will always be me.”
New coach Ady Pennock switched captains when he took over, preferring centre-half Max Ehmer to wear the armband.
“I loved having the armband and it was something I felt proud to have,” said Wright.
“The gaffer tells me I am still club captain and have roles and responsibility around the place and I will continue that.
“I would love to still wear the armband but it is fantastic for Max and the gaffer explained to me how he wanted the centre-half to wear it because he can see the whole pitch.
“He was a centre-half in his day and I have to respect the decision. I just get on with it.”
Wright was certainly getting on with the job at Sheffield United, notching his first double of goals in his career.
He said: “We were delighted with the point and I’m delighted with the goals but the main thing was putting in a performance and getting a positive result.”
