Gillingham manager Justin Edinburgh believes the best is yet to come from Dominic Samuel.
The 21-year-old Reading striker this week agreed to extend his loan spell with the Gills until January 3.
Samuel scored six minutes into his debut with the Gills but has been unable to add to that tally in his next three outings.
Edinburgh said: “We are delighted to extend the loan but we haven’t seen the best of him.
“He can improve. We know it and he knows it. He is getting better with every game and we hope and expect that to continue.
“He has given us that focal point up front that perhaps we didn’t have.
“He allows Cody McDonald and Rory Donnelly to play off him and we are delighted that Reading have allowed him to stay. With the busy period we have got, with the form we are in, it is fantastic to be able to extend it.”
Edinburgh must now decide who to partner him alongside. McDonald scored in Gillingham’s last game, a 2-2 draw against Shrewsbury, which Donnelly missed through suspension.
“They are the decisions you want,” said the manager.
“You don’t want the team to pick itself. You want to be given tough tasks and hopefully you make more right decisions than wrong ones.”
