Gillingham forward Regan Charles-Cook's long wait for a Brandon Hanlan assist finally over

Regan Charles-Cook has waited a while for his mate to repay the favour.

Brandon Hanlan teed up the winning goal at Wycombe on Saturday, almost seven months since the roles were reversed.

On the opening game of the season at Accrington, Hanlan was on hand to tap the ball home from a ball into the box by Charles-Cook.

Saturday’s match-winner went straight over to his team-mate to celebrate.

Charles Cook said: “I went to Brandon and thanked him for the assist. I said ‘it’s about time mate!’.

“Me and Brandon have grown up together and have played together since the age of 16.

“I know where Brandon is going to be and he knows where I am going to be. I had confidence in him to beat his man and put in a cross. I just needed to hit the box.

“It hit my chest but they all count and I would take another 13 goals like that any day of the week.”

Hanlan’s form has helped the Gills win two of their last three games.

“He is back to the Brandon that I know,” Charles-Cook said.

“His hold-up play was very good, he was taking on players with his pace and you could see he was full of confidence. When he has confidence any defender would be terrified.”

Charles-Cook had to bide his time before seeing some action at the weekend. But once on, it took him just five minutes to get the winner.

“The manager just kept telling me to warm up,” said the 24-year-old, who spent most of the match pacing the touchline.

“He was making sure I was ready and so when I went on it was like I had been playing already.”

Charles-Cook soon got in the thick of it.

He said: “The manager wants you to work hard, that’s the minimum, even if it’s for one minute, half an hour or 45, you have to work your socks off and show your determination.

“It is always difficult coming off the bench but the gaffer wants whoever is coming off the bench to try and change the game. That is what I had in my mind the whole game.

“The game wasn’t the greatest, it’s one of those places you have to fight it out, but it’s great to get a 1-0 win and I would take them until the end of the season.

“I was happy to get another goal, it has been a while.”

Victory keeps the Gills clear of the drop zone but Charles-Cook knows there is plenty of work still to be done.

“We’re not comfortable at all,” he said. “We need to get to the 50-mark at least and we just need to keep winning as many games as possible.

“As long as we keep fighting and having that self-belief. It doesn’t matter how we win games, we just have to win together and I am very confident.”
