Gillingham’s development team were comfortably beaten by an MK Dons XI on Monday night.

Milton Keynes won the Final Third Development League Cup match 3-0 with goals from Tom Hitchcock, Giorgio Rasulo and Mark Randall.

The closest the young Gills team went to scoring was when out-of-favour striker Antonio German crashed an effort against a post in the first half at stadium MK.

Along with German, senior keeper Glenn Morris and midfielder Josh Pritchard were included in the squad.

Pritchard was out to impress after recently being told he needed to do more if he was go get a shot at the Gills first-team.

But the night belonged to the hosts and George Baldock hit the bar before Hitchcock netted the opener with 25 minutes gone.

Hitchcock was on loan at Fleetwood earlier this season and he scored the only goal of the game when they met the Gills in League 1 on November 1.

Young striker Jack Sellens had made a lively start for the Gills, but it was German who came close, with a powerful shot that thumped the woodwork.

Teenage defender Josh Staunton – who was on the bench for the first team at the weekend – forced a save from home keeper Ian McLoughlin.

Milton Keynes held their lead into the break and went 2-0 up as Hitchcock’s backheel found Rasulo and he fired home from close range.

A long-range effort from the busy Sellens was saved by McLoughlin, before he was replaced and MK had the last word, when Randall smashed in the third with a minute left.
