The Ashford heat of the KM Big Charity Quiz is upon the town again and the winners will be in the running for the title of cleverest quizzers in Kent.
Scores of teams will answer questions on sport, entertainment, current affairs and more in their bid to be the brains of the borough 2018 – even enduring the ultimate in random riddles: the readers’ questions.
Last year’s winners, the Moomins, from Canterbury, scored a gigantic 90 per cent but were subsequently pipped to the post by one point in the county final by the winners of the Medway heat - Supernova.
But many teams’ scores were much lower and quizmaster Simon Dolby is keen to stress that the quiz, while competitive, attracts a wide range of abilities.
“Of course everyone is there to do well, but the overriding aim of the Big Quiz is to have fun and raise money for charity,” he said. “It attracts a real mix of ages and types of people – many are serious quizzers, but equally many are people who just want to have a good night.
“But I generally find that people are surprised by how much they do know. Most of us have so much more general knowledge than we think we do, and the satisfaction that comes from knowing a random fact can be really very high!”
The quiz will raise money for the Kentish Express newspaper’s charity of the year Ashford Volunteer Centre, along with literacy and road safety services for schools.
A prize draw will ensure any charity submitting at least one quiz team will be in the running to take a slice of the charity pot – which could be up to £1,000.
Members of the winning quiz team will take home DFDS Seaways vouchers worth £150 each, and there will also be a mini competition to win two Eurostar tickets, plus raffle prizes including classic toys and collectables from Hornby.
The quiz takes place at the Ashford International Hotel on Friday, June 15 at 7pm. Teams can have up to eight people.
The KM Charity Big Quiz is supported by Barclays bank, who will be matching the money raised and manning the charity bar, Shepherd Neame, which will be donating all the drinks for the bar, Office Angels, who will be helping on the night, Hallett And Co solicitors, Specsavers, and IMP, who are providing the PA system.
