HUNDREDS of people got on their bikes to support the British Heart Foundation in the first Viking Coastal Trail ride.

It is hoped that the sponsored event on Sunday, which was supported by kmfm and is the first BHF ride in Kent, has reached its £10,000 target although pledges are still being collected.

Organiser Emma Cross for BHF said: "We are absolutely delighted with how many people took part and with how much support was given by the local community in Thanet.

"A huge thanks go out to all the cyclists who took part. Heart and circulatory disease still remains the number one killer of people in the UK.

"People who support events like the Viking Cycle play a starring role for the BHF in the race against this devastating disease. A special mention must also go to all the local volunteers who kindly gave up their time to help on the day."

Riders gathered at three starting points at the Roman Fort at Reculver, the Viking Ship at Pegwell Bay, and at Joss Bay, Broadstairs.

The ride was started at Viking Bay by kmfm presenter Johnny Lewis, who rode from his home in Sandwich to the event and then rode on to Joss Bay.

He said: "It was lovely event along a fabulous coastal route that takes in some breathtaking scenery. The community spirit was fabulous and people who were not riding cheered us on."

Sarah Osborne from kmfm said: "We are really happy with the response from the people of east Kent to this event that raises much-needed funds for a worthy cause."
